Intermediate ⏱️ 15-18 minutes Required Updated: November 2025

Complete Monero guide covering wallet setup, transaction privacy, ring signatures, and how to buy/exchange XMR safely.

✅ DrugHub Only Accepts Monero: This is for your protection. Bitcoin transactions are fully traceable by law enforcement.

💰 What is Monero (XMR)?

Monero is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency designed to be completely untraceable and anonymous.

Why Monero Instead of Bitcoin?

❌ Bitcoin (Transparent)

  • All transactions public on blockchain
  • Amounts visible
  • Addresses linkable
  • Fully traceable by law enforcement
  • Used in convictions

✅ Monero (Private)

  • All transactions hidden
  • Amounts hidden
  • Addresses untraceable
  • Impossible to trace by design
  • True financial privacy

Monero Privacy Features

  • Ring Signatures: Your transaction is mixed with 15 others, making it impossible to tell which is yours
  • Stealth Addresses: Every transaction creates a new, one-time address for the recipient
  • RingCT (Ring Confidential Transactions): Transaction amounts are completely hidden
  • Dandelion++: IP address obfuscation when broadcasting transactions

💼 Setting Up Monero Wallet

Option 1: Official Monero GUI Wallet (Recommended)

Best for: Most users, maximum privacy

Download:

  1. Visit official site: getmonero.org
  2. Download "Monero GUI Wallet" for your OS
  3. Verify download hashes (advanced users: verify GPG signature)
  4. Install and launch

Setup:

  1. Select language
  2. Choose "Create new wallet"
  3. Select "Advanced mode""Standard wallet"
  4. Give wallet a name (e.g., "DrugHub-Wallet")
  5. CRITICAL: Write down the 25-word mnemonic seed
    • This is your backup - write it on paper
    • Store in multiple secure offline locations
    • Never store digitally or take photos
    • If lost, your funds are gone forever
  6. Set strong wallet password
  7. Choose daemon mode:
    • Simple mode (Remote node): Faster setup, slightly less private
    • Advanced mode (Local node): Full privacy, requires 150+ GB disk space and several days to sync
  8. Wait for sync to complete

Option 2: Cake Wallet (Mobile)

Best for: Mobile users, convenience

  • Download from official app store (iOS/Android)
  • Create new wallet
  • Back up 25-word seed
  • Set PIN

Option 3: Feather Wallet (Lightweight)

Best for: Low-resource computers, Tails OS users

  • Lightweight alternative to GUI wallet
  • Uses remote nodes by default
  • Faster sync times

🚨 NEVER Use Web Wallets or Exchange Wallets for Storage

Exchanges can:

  • Freeze your funds
  • Report to authorities
  • Get hacked
  • Exit scam

Always withdraw to your own wallet immediately after purchase.

📬 Understanding Monero Addresses

Primary Address

Your main Monero address (starts with 4...)

  • 95 characters long
  • Can be reused safely (stealth addresses protect privacy)
  • Share this to receive XMR

Subaddresses (Recommended)

Generate unlimited unique addresses from your primary address:

  • Starts with 8...
  • Improves privacy and organization
  • Use different subaddress for each vendor/order
  • Never reuse subaddresses

Creating Subaddresses:

  • GUI Wallet: Go to "Receive" tab → Click "Create new address"
  • Label each subaddress (e.g., "Vendor-AlphaSupply", "DrugHub-Order-123")

Integrated Addresses

Used by some merchants - combines address + payment ID

  • Starts with 4... but longer (106 characters)
  • DrugHub generates these automatically for deposits

💵 How to Buy Monero

Method 1: No-KYC P2P Exchanges (Most Private)

LocalMonero.co (Best Option)

Privacy Level: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • P2P marketplace - buy directly from sellers
  • No KYC required
  • Payment methods: Cash by mail, bank transfer, gift cards, PayPal, etc.
  • Escrow protection

How to use:

  1. Visit LocalMonero.co (accessible via Tor)
  2. Create account (use Tor, fake email)
  3. Find seller with good reputation
  4. Initiate trade
  5. Follow payment instructions
  6. Seller releases XMR from escrow to your wallet

Bisq Network

Privacy Level: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Decentralized P2P exchange
  • No KYC, no accounts
  • Requires BTC first, then swap to XMR
  • Download Bisq desktop app

Method 2: Non-KYC Instant Exchanges (Fast but Slightly Less Private)

Privacy Level: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Examples: ChangeNow, StealthEX, Trocador

  • No registration required
  • Instant swap from BTC/ETH/other cryptos to XMR
  • Use with VPN + Tor
  • Higher fees than P2P

Process:

  1. Buy BTC from cash (Bitcoin ATM, LocalBitcoins)
  2. Send BTC to instant exchange
  3. Receive XMR in your wallet

Method 3: KYC Exchanges (Least Private)

Privacy Level: ⭐⭐

Examples: Kraken, Binance (in regions where XMR is still listed)

  • Requires ID verification
  • Links crypto to your real identity
  • Reports to government
  • Only use as last resort

If you must use KYC exchange:

  1. Buy XMR on exchange
  2. Immediately withdraw to your own wallet
  3. Use wallet for at least 7 days
  4. Send through multiple hops (your wallet → another your wallet → market)
  5. Use different amounts (don't send exact purchase amount)

💡 Best Practice: Mixing Methods

For maximum privacy: KYC Exchange → Your Wallet → LocalMonero → New Wallet → DrugHub

This breaks the chain of custody and makes tracing nearly impossible.

🔒 Monero Privacy Best Practices

  • ✅ Use official Monero GUI wallet or Feather wallet
  • ✅ Run your own node for maximum privacy (advanced)
  • ✅ Use subaddresses for each transaction
  • ✅ Never reuse addresses
  • ✅ Buy from no-KYC sources when possible
  • ✅ Wait 10+ confirmations before spending received XMR
  • ✅ Use Tor when accessing exchanges
  • ✅ Keep wallet software updated
  • ✅ Backup 25-word seed offline
  • ❌ Never keep funds on exchanges
  • ❌ Never share your private keys or seed
  • ❌ Never take screenshots of wallet balances
  • ❌ Don't discuss amounts on clearnet

🔧 Common Issues

❌ Wallet Won't Sync

Solutions:

  • Check internet connection
  • Try different remote node (Settings → Node)
  • Restart wallet
  • Update to latest version

❌ Transaction Not Showing Up

Solutions:

  • Wait - Monero transactions take ~2 minutes per block
  • Check if wallet is fully synced
  • Verify you used correct address
  • Check transaction on blockchain explorer (but reduces privacy slightly)

❌ Can't Restore Wallet from Seed

Solutions:

  • Verify all 25 words are spelled correctly
  • Ensure correct order
  • Set restore height to before wallet creation (or use height 0)
  • Try "Restore from keys" instead
